So I know it's a litte early for new year's resolutions, but I've been thinking about it anyway, and I'm getting started. Last year's number one resolution was no smoking. I kept that one perfectly. I did not smoke even one cigarette for the whole year, and it wasn't bad. I'm going to keep that one going for sure.
I also had a goal to read one fiction and one non-fiction book each month. That one didn't go quite as well, but I came pretty close, I've definitely been reading more, though. I did not get so far on the writing goals.
This year is one big goal with a few parts. I plan on getting in, and staying in the best shape I've ever been in. Woot. But that's not really a resolution, it's just an idea. A resolution is a specific commitment to a plan.
1. I will run at least 5 days per week (barring major illness or injury, in which case I'll do what I can)
2. After each run I will do a bit of strength and stretching
3. Each day I will have no more than one small to moderate portion of any unhealthy snack or dessert. I don't want to put a lot of additional emphasis on food here. Gorging on crap is probably my problem. I will be careful of my choices and watch portion sizes, but I don't plan on counting calories. It makes me too crazy to do that. No particular weight goals either. I have some benchmarks that I'd like to hit, but they aren't that important. The eating healthy and training is. I fully expect the rest to take care of itself.
Today I completed my first week of base training for my June half marathon. I plan on building up fairly conservatively, but I wasn't sure where to start. I have been pretty active for the past few months, but I haven't been running much. Maybe one to three 2-3 mile runs every two weeks or so, sometimes less. I have been doing cardio 3 to 5 days a week and weights 2-4 days. I'm in better shape after not running for a while than I have been in the past, probably because I've still been working out with at least some consistency.
I did 15 miles this week, and my hip flexors are somewhat sore, and my hamstrings maybe just a little. Feeling pretty pumped and motivated, but I'm glad tomorrow is a rest day. I had originally planned only to do 12 this week, but I was feeling good. Today took a lot out of me, though. I'm definitely going to plan on keeping a 15 mile weekly total for about 4 weeks. If I still feel sore next week, I might even dial it back a mile or two. We'll see.
